Fuyang Paper Cut

Fuyang paper cut is an ancient traditional folk art in Anhui Province, and it could date back to Southern and Northern Dynasties, according to relevant historical material. This folk art form has a long history in Fuyang, and therefore the Yingzhou District was named “the home of Chinese paper cut” by the Ministry of Culture. As early as the 1960s, relevant departments of Culture in Anhui had collected and collated artworks of Fuyang paper cut, and published “the paper cut collection of Fuyang, Anhui Province”.

The folk paper cut art has spread widely in Fuyang area, a pair of scissors or one graver, together with various kinds of colored paper, can perfectly present the charm of folk paper cut art in the middle reaches of the Huaihe River. It indeed shows its local features of simplicity and elegance, couple hardness with softness, compared with the northern paper cut and the southern paper cut.

Fuyang paper cut is an art form of entertainment for people living in the Northwest Anhui Province. It has been closely associated with local festival etiquette, dress patterns, door and window decoration, carving and embroidery for thousands of years. The paper-cutting not only expresses the emotions of the broad masses of the people, but also reposes their good ideals and best wishes.

In 2008, Fuyang paper cut was listed into representative projects of the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage, which was inherited by Cheng Xinghong. We are now facing the aging problem of paper-cutting artists, that means its inheritance situation is very serious. Fuyang paper-cutting is in urgent need of rescue and protection.
