The assembly of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), the world’s largest nuclear fusion project, started in France on Tuesday.

More than 30 countries including China take part in the project. As a major ITER China working group, the Institute of Plasma Physics, Hefei Institutes of Physical Science undertakes the procurement package of superconducting conductors, correction coil, superconducting feeder, power supply, diagnosis and assembly, accounting for nearly 80% of China's ITER procurement package.

The ITER is being assembled to replicate the fusion power of the sun, which provides light and warmth and enables life on Earth.

The project requires collaboration of seven parties - China, the European Union, Russia, the United States, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and India. China signed the ITER agreement in 2006.
