12 scientists from across the globe won the Micius Quantum Prize, the newly founded Micius Quantum Foundation announced at a press conference in Hefei, capital of East China’s Anhui province, on Friday.
The prize for 2018 and 2019 recognizes outstanding achievements in quantum computing and quantum communications.
Pan Jianwei, a world-leading quantum scientist with the Anhui-based University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), is among the 2019 laureates. He and Austrian scientist Anton Zeilinger were awarded for their groundbreaking experiments in multi-photon interferometry and free-space quantum transmission that enable practically secure and large-scale quantum communications, according to the foundation’s official website, miciusprize.org.
Detailed information on the foundation and the laureates has been released on the website.
Each of the 12 winners will get 1 million yuan (about US$150,000).
With the aim of promoting scientific researches on quantum information, some Chinese entrepreneurs established the foundation with a donation of 100 million yuan.
