Anhui's summer grain output stood at 16.08 million tonnes this year, down 2.26 percent from a year ago, the province’s agricultural commission said Wednesday, citing statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The province climbed from the fourth spot last year to the third, thanks to an increase in the planting area of crops, according to a spokesman with the commission.
The total area for growing summer crops rose by 52,840 hectares to 2.87 million hectares this year.
The province’s summer grain output dropped largely due to unfavorable weather conditions in sowing and maturation periods, the spokesman said.
To minimize adverse effects of the bad weather, the province took active steps to improve field management and enhance prevention against plant diseases as well as insect pests.
Up to 165,000 combine harvesters were used for the harvesting of summer crops.
